Dear Southern Maryland Community,

 

In 2014, we hosted a little community event

called The Christmas Village with the tagline

“A New Family Tradition.” We knew that

SOMD had limited options for affordable,

seasonal, family fun, and we hoped that maybe

5,000-10,000 people would show up. The

event was far more successful than we ever

dreamed, and more than 40,000 people came

through the gates of the Fairgrounds.

 

Over 3 days, The Christmas Village showcased all the things that make SOMD great: Three stages of live entertainment, a dozen restaurants and food trucks, and more than 150 local craft and retail vendors. We are grateful to all those who participated and attended!

 

Our original hope was to make that event an annual tradition. After taking last year off, we thought we would be ready to bring it back in 2016. Unfortunately this will not be the year.

As we said this time last year, the sheer number of attendees, when measured against our commitment to excellence and sustainability demands an increase and restructuring of resources. While we LOVE hosting this event, our primary mission is to create a church that “connects the disconnected to Christ, Community, and Cause.” An event for 40,000 people doesn’t just happen…it requires extraordinary preparation and focus. We are unapologetic that all of our staffing and financial resources are fully invested in the local church right now.

 

At this point, we aren’t going to make promises, but we want you to hear that we REALLY want to bring The Christmas Village back in 2017. It’s a memorable and engaging event for people of all ages and stages, an economic driver for many businesses, and a tourism draw for Southern Maryland. Besides that, it’s just plain fun for our team!
